1. Montesaur and General Zaroff have many similarities and differences. Montesaur is getting his revenge on somebody for an unknown reason, but General Zaroff kills for sport and entertainment. They both kill people and have an evil side.
2. He feels justified because those are his ways. He feels as though he is obligated to take care of Fortunado because he insulted him.
3. He is a good target for Montesaur because he is dressed in a costume. His guards are also not by his side. Last he is drunk and willing to go with him.
4. They have more differences than they are alike. Montesaur is a crude man that if insulted will kill in a gruesome way. Fortunado and Montesaur are both dressed up and at the carnival.
5. Verbal irony: Montesaur says "luckily met" this is irony because he is about to kill him. Situational irony: These orders were sufficient, I well knew, to insure their immediate disappearance, one and all, as soon as my back was turned. Dramatic irony: Roof of the catacombs and was backed by one.
6. One symbol/foreshadow is the title itself. It represents death by the word cask meaning casket. It is also foreshadowing to future references to the death of Fortunado.
