They didn't believe it because they thought that they wouldn't be effected. Nothing bad had happened so they thought they were safe from it. They only wanted to hear good news not news from a crazy guy on the street. They also thought good news was going to come from the meeting Elie's dad was invited to.

  1. Jake - Elie is a boy, and chapter 1 ends in 1944. As far as the allusions go look at what is being alluded to. You are describing this as symbols.
